First Dr. Snyder will numb the area around the tooth in question. If you are uneasy about this part of the procedure, Dr. Snyder will offer nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) to relieve any stress. Next, he’ll drill out the decay and replace it with a filling.

Dr. Snyder primarily uses either composite fillings or amalgam ones, but, if you prefer something else, he’ll explore all options you deem appropriate for your mouth.

• Amalgam is the easiest type of filling to install. A mixture of mercury, silver, tin or other metals, amalgam fillings are inexpensive and can be installed quickly.

• Composite-resin fillings are tooth-colored ones. This material is most often used on visible front teeth where appearance is important.

• Other materials that may be used for fillings include iomoners (tooth-colored materials used for smaller cavities and cavities between teeth), gold (costly, hard to work with, and a long procedure) and ceramics (costly, tooth-colored fillings that require special equipment and dental lab production).
